35 hp surface drive. put rock guards on it , leave it stock , go slow , and trim the motor up when you get in the rocks. youll have no problems with rocks or reliability.
I'll second that! Love surface drive on my 1448! Biggest advantage in rocks vs a jet is the ability to go slow. With a jet you pretty much have to be on plane to get over anything real shallow....thus putting your hull at bigger risk of getting damaged. I've got a 23 hp and it's easy to lift without trim (I like not having trim because if you hit something, it'll just kick up and not take the whole impact on your trim system)...not sure how easy a 35 hp is to man handle. If you're wanting to run at any speed in the shallows, I'd HIGHLY recommend a rock guard. GOOD LUCK
