Was thinkig about getting a outboat jet boat to run shallow but have kinda snuffed that idea because of all the log jams where I've been fishing. My question is in a river that has shoals that are about 6-8 inches deep with some rocks hangng out to steer around and some other very shallow areas what's y'all oppinin oN the best type of Boat? This will be strictly day time boat no lights, genny, etc. And will more than likley be a 1652 because I don't need anything bigger than 16 ft where I've been fishing but still want a wide bottom. Also for a non mud situation 90% of the time what would you recomend surfac drive or longtail? And what is the dfference in the two? ( yes I know one is long and the other short) but what is each one made for? What would be better in rocks and such? Sorry don't know too much about these motors and trying to get a feel for em and learn a little bit before I buy anythig. Thanks in advance.

I'll second that! Love surface drive on my 1448! Biggest advantage in rocks vs a jet is the ability to go slow. With a jet you pretty much have to be on plane to get over anything real shallow....thus putting your hull at bigger risk of getting damaged. I've got a 23 hp and it's easy to lift without trim (I like not having trim because if you hit something, it'll just kick up and not take the whole impact on your trim system)...not sure how easy a 35 hp is to man handle. If you're wanting to run at any speed in the shallows, I'd HIGHLY recommend a rock guard. GOOD LUCK
