I took my daughter (taylor) on a youth deer hunt WAAAAYYYY out in West Tx this weekend. The ranch we hunted was extremely rugged and the hunt master told us there were some big aoudad up there and that the ranch had agreed to allow a youth to hunt them if he would reccomend a kid that could shoot. Well Tays kill record won us the spot!

Now I dont know if you have ever hunted them but they live up on cliffs in some of the most inhospitable country imaginable! The would spook from a truck at TWO MILES and run over the mountain. We got within 800yds of one group but couldnt get an closer and they wouldnt let Tay take the shot.

Sunday morning we were up there before dawn and glassing as soon as the sun started hitting the cliffs. We found a group of ten about two miles away and started a stalk. They were feeding down the face and we stayed below them thank GOD! Im getting too old and fat for this! We got about 500yds below them and they started feeding back up the cliff. Our guide had a range finder that gave the actual hold yardage and compensated for angle. He took a reading on a whopper and it said hold for 320yds. Once again I told him Tay could make the shot and he just said wait. In a few minutes they started moving and it was clear that they were going to go back up so I sat Tay down on the ground and adjusted my shooting stick for her. She was a little too shaky for the shot so I put rocks under her elbows so they would be hooked up too. She told me she had him and I told the guide we were going to take the shot. He just looked at me and shrugged.

The big ram was butt to us and then slowly turned quartering away. Tays 3006 boomed and it seemed forever before the WHOOOP of the bullet hit reached us. He swung around and fell right off the rock before staggering about 25yds down the cliff and piling up against a cedar bush!

I got the gun as the rest ran up the cliff. One of them stopped and I made a lucky shot and rolled him off the mountain! The guide just kept saying,"She hit that ram!" over and over while he hugged her! It took us two hour to get too em! Did I say Im getting too old and fat?
Every kid in camp killed a deer but you should have seen the commotion when we rolled in with those horns sticking out of the truck! What a blast!!!

Pics are a few post down!

Tell her congrats. I was invited to the second ever texas parks and wildlife dream hunt when I was 14. Two kids missed trophy bucks. I never saw a shooter buck. We were asked to kill does too. The last evening I shot a doe at ~364 (we stepped it off). Longest shot i've ever taken. I will probley never try and shoot that far again. My grandpa bet me 20.00 I couldn't make the shot. I got my 20.00. I know how difficult it must have been for her to fight through her excitement. She's also lucky to have a dad that helps her do this type of stuff. Way to go. :tu:

Thanks guys! And lucky isnt the word for it.... i am BLESSED to have a Dad that wants to share the outdoors with me! He wasnt kidding when he said that was inhospitale country....it was down right vicious! But then again, by the grace of God I was able to spend 3 days in the most beautiful country I have ever laid eyes on with my best friend. Dad and I were able to take our first Aoudads together, and I really cant imagine a better way. I did kinda feel like a rockstar when we pulled into camp though :) A little excitement and a few high fives make a girl feel pretty darn good about herself! I will age out of the program this year, but Lord willing Dad and I will be back next year as sponsers for two more kids. I cant wait to share what I love most!

Very NICE!!! Good Job CamoChick :tu: I took my son when he was 4 on a hunt for an aoudad it turned out to be too much for us to get him on one in his range so he settled for a Corsican ram. Taylor I hope my son thinks of me as his best friend when he is your age.
Great job and thank you for the story and pictures.
Congrats to you too Garguys for being a great father:tu:
