We have a maxxum 80# thrust 3x steering and it wore out the brushes in 6 or 7 trips we replaced the brushes and now it pretty much doesn't work right when you turn it all the way up its like it catches and wontnpull anymore when its halfway up it pulls decent but vibrates like its only pulling half of the full turn any suggestions I think my armature is rurnt but if anyone thinks different let me know

Did you put it back together correctly when you changed the brushes??

Makes no sense to me. I have never had to change the brushes in a MinnKota and we fish lots.

Same here!!!We never had to change brushes and we also fish lots.:cf:

well we have taken it apart 30 times prly between last year and this year and we have always got it runing again.we put new bruses in this year and they wore out after 5 or so trips. now its like its not geting full power checked all wires and stuff just cant figure it out. pretty positive its back right unless it was wrong when we got it. minnkota guy sed you should only have to change the brushes bout every 7 years

In your original post you made it sound like it was a new MinnKota and the brushes went out after a few trips. Now that you posted the "real deal" you will have better luck getting a correct answer. You should be able to look at the armature and tell whether it is wore bad enough to tear up brushes???

I'd buy a armature and brush plate and new brushes and see what that does for you. Whatever the Minn Kota guy told you you can throw out the window. His experince has been with guys using them on Bass boats...Bowfishing is whole different animal...Running them shallow, beating em up, and running em in their upper ranges for 8 hrs straight isn't what they were made to do...The last 80 lb maxxum i bought was in the repair shop 3 times in a two month period before I returned it put that money into building a fan...I just had too many bad experinces with trollers the last 3 or so yrs to stick with one.....I think if you are gonna have a troller on a 18 ft or bigger bowfishing boat you might as well go 36V for them to hold em well unlesss you are just gonna be drifting the river shining bigheads or something.

i usually caryy a great big hammer, sometimes if you just beat it a few times, it will behave, or light a match under it until it screams "UNCLE" ALL my stuff that fails is subject to torture

Not to discourage you but if I owned a daggum thing other than a cookie jar that I had taken apart 30 times it would have gone by way of the doodoo can many moons ago. Sorry, I know this aint a lot of help but ...wow....you have spent about 4 fishing trips inside that motor...good luck fellas

thats funny cuz when it craped out the other night my buddy elbowed the crap out of it and it started working again lol

Yep. Most troller problems stem from a troller too small for the boat it's pulling. Someone needs to make a troller big enough for the 20'+ boats some people use for bowfishing since a 101 or 109 is on the small side for them. I'm thinking:
15-16' boat----80# troller minimum
17-18' boat---101# troller "
19-20' boat---130# troller "
21-22' boat---150# troller "

he knows that we r bowfishing with it. and trollers are not made for what we do with them thats for sure but is anything made for what we use it for. if some one would jus send everything that needed testing to bowfishers we would put it to the test for sure.

need a place near guntersville that works on them..... if not were prly gonna have to drive 2hrs to get the parts.
Warner's Dock online has good prices on MinnKota parts.
