Run bigger wire, make sure its not underpowered for your boat, don't let it eat when it hits bottom or gets bunches of grass on the prop...there's a bunch of causes for it, very simply put, trollers aren't built for what we put them through so you gotta pay attention

I put a small 110 v personal fan tie wrapped to the heat fins on the head of my 101 the circut board was fried and as soon as it got a little warm it would cut out . After i put the fan on it i ran that same board for another 3 nights before it finally crapped out . I didnt cut any holes at all in the head . Night Prowler ive got 2 12 volt fans a hair bigger than yours is was going to mount them just like that but im afraid it will get water in the circut board. What do you do when it rains ? I really heat up a troller bad pulling a 28 foot toon with a 101 and a kipawa prop .

Yea I'd say! I noticed when I ran my kip prop it ran hotter. I pulled this lil fan off the botton of a frequency drive motor starter from a controll panel. It really pushes air and uses 12v. I don't really fish in the rain but the main board looks sealed so I'm really not worried bout it! Ive had it for 3 years now and she got rained on a few times. I also drilled two 1/2" holes tword the tiller handle for air to come out.
The lil fan bites pretty good also when I rest my arm on it cuse there's no guard! Lol

I've got 4ga hard wired to my 80lb riptide, it still gets hot enough you can't keep hands on it.
I wouldn't worry about water on the control board, but if it gets very much water in the head it'll run down the shaft into the motor. Motor sure as hell ain't waterproof.
I think the motor is creating the heat, just travels up the shaft and into the electrical box. Sure wish someone would invent a wet wind troller motor.
