When bowfishing a creek or river do you usually work up or down stream?
Ha ha ha!! Good point!!Man if I was a male gator gar, I might just turn gay! They are 1/3 the size of the gal they are courting. She bites them all up, rips their tails and fins off. And for what???? Just the chance to squirt on some eggs stuck to the grass! Dangit man!
Thats it right there! I do the same thing on gatorgar and longnose. If i want to just do some shallow creek shooting i have to go downstream as only a couple hundred yards upstream and i'm in the lake just upstream from my shop.I usually crank up the troller and speedshoot going down as the carp are usually all facing upstream and i spook more then i get on the initial pass.On the way back upstream however,i slow down and sneak up on them from behind and the fish in the boat ratio goes way up.
makes senseI thought this was a joke when i saw it but I guess not..... YOU SHOULD ALWAYS FISH UPSTREAM if there is current! Fish in current ALWAYS face upsteam. If you are going down, you are trying to come right into his eyesight. Going upstream lets you come up frome their blind spot. Thought everyone knew that. Guess i just took that for granted.
:tu:I wasnt trying to be a know-it-all either. Just that I have fished the current in the trinity all my life and absolutely take it for granted that you have to shoot upstream to maximize the school. Lots of times we will drift through a school of fish till we get below them and then troll back into them. If we shoot a couple on the way down , the school will bust up and thats all we get. When we troll up into them , we can pick em off without spooking the fish upstream. Load the boat that way!
Dang know-it-all! LOL:tu:
GAR roll INTO the current, just like a plane takes off into the wind. They have air bladders which act as ballasts. When air supply is low, bladder shrinks, forces them to the surface to "gulp" air.The current acts as headwind and allows them to get "lift" to the surface.
thats exactly how you shoot bigheads on the missouri. Drift past the wing **** then troll up to the slack water area where the fish are holding. Cover lotsa water that way.Lots of times we will drift through a school of fish till we get below them and then troll back into them. If we shoot a couple on the way down , the school will bust up and thats all we get. When we troll up into them , we can pick em off without spooking the fish upstream. Load the boat that way!
You need more troller and converters. If you are having to let the current push your boat you must be seriously undertrollered. ........ Having a 80# troller on a 1655 is priceless for fishing in the current. A constant 26 volts from the converters ain't no bad thing either!!!
