just got my 6 HPS lights and im a little worried if they are going to be as bright as the 8 halogens i just took off. any input?
the lights i got are cooper small falcon 150 watt HPS

Idk about brighter, but a different tint for sure, we went from 400w hps to 250w hps, made a huge difference in brightness, IMO hps are the way to go, but my advice is stik em on and go kill some chit see how you like em, if not then switch back

My guess is, they are gonna seem dimmer to you! At least this was my thought when I first switched, but they do work very well! And now that I have 4 400w, I would never go back to anything smaller! All personal opinion, they have more lumens per light than the halogens, but the halogens put off the "brighter" light. But just think, now that you have hps, the fish will glow in total muddy water, lol!! Joke, I joke!!

I thought the same thing.. at 1st... but i can tell you 4 150w HPS is a ton better than 6 - 500w Halo's they don't seem as brite because of the color... but they cast out wider and farther and you will pick up fish better in stained or clear water...

I agree. Not much of an upgrade if you were running 500w halogens before.Pretty much all you did was went from white light to yellow light and that aint worth a chit plus hps's aren't cheap.Like they said, your going to have to step up to higher wattage lights with hps's before you can tell much of a difference in brightness.I like metal halides personally because I don't like yellow.Mine are 250w and 400w and even the 250's will knock the socks off of halogens for brightness.

thanks for the input fellas. spending 6 bones on lights and then plugging one in and seeing that it wasn't super human makes me a lil nervous lol. im going to have to build brackets for them since the little pivot arm aint gonna be strong enough so if i dont like them im kinda screwed. one of my big reasons for the switch was so i could use a smaller quieter genny. hopw this decision dont bite me since it was over a grand and i had to get the wife to allow me to do it. lol

Notice in the 1st pick how they they compare on how much they cast out on the wall... then note in the 2nd pic how much that Halo is tilted up when teh HPS is sitting flat to the ground and most of its light it hitting the floor... Nice set up there Bud...lol... I used those same Halo's for 5 years and shoot thousands of fish over them but we had to wait tell the run off from the MT was done and the water cleared up... not any more with the HPS for some reason the fish seem to glow in stained water over HPS and we are 500 + fish this season from last year using Halo's...

Ive never shoot over hps lights only halos and I see a lot of fish I couldnt justify the cost when it came down to it. sure I wanted to but I think i need to see some lights in person before I make the switch.

in the pics the hps seems to be pretty bright compared to the halos just dang do they look dark

GREAT PIC!!! You can deff tell where the light is going in those!!!

#19 ·
dang bright but how is it on the water. the only thing i have compared is 2 mag lights. a halo and led. the led is way brighter on land but the halo is way brighter on the water when we are duck huntin.

lol will those MH bulbs work in my HPS fixtures?

#27 ·
Halos putting HPS to shame hahahahahahahahahaha....I started out with all ten as 500's but had to knock 7 down to 300's so my genny could handle my iota as well. You can HARDLY tell the difference from a 5oo to a 300............My 7 new hps are just as good or BETTER as either previous setup with alot less draw on the genny.

I think you and Salty Dawg both need to lay off of the crack pipe, that's what I think.Oh and that last shoot we shot off of 100w metal halides and whipped the chit out of some airboats that were running 400w high pressure sodiums and we was fishing the same holes. Not sure if they just couldn't see them or if they just couldn't hit them.Like Forrest Gump says, "Maybe it's both?Maybe both are happening at the same time?"

what if you mixed them up say 150 hps then a halo then a hps etc. or just a waste of time pick one and stick to it ? I run six 500w halos now but was thinking of using a 150 hps then a 500w halo then another 150 hps per side our water usually runs murky to stained but do find clear water once in a blue moon

I've seen halos and hps's mixed before and seen them lit up on the water but I haven't ever shot over them.I have shot over metal halides mixed with halos. My opinion on that is the halos don't do much good.Once the halides fire up they overpower the halogens and turn the yellowish halo around the boat into white and cast light farther out even.I had no clue that they would do that until I seen it with my own eyes.

You misspelled insinuating lol.If that comes as a shock to your system then I got one even better for ya'.I just read on facebook while ago that a guy on there (no names got to protect the innocent haha) is selling his 400's because he claims the 100w led's do a better job for him than those did.No I aint no expert but it don't take a freaking rocket scientist to figure it out.If hps's were all that then why don't they use them to light up ball fields and chit like that instead of using metal halides?Well I'm sure there's a pretty good reason for it and I would say that reason is because people would rather be able to see what the he// is going on around them.:poke:

Probably one of the better threads I've seen with photos showing the difference between the three = Halo vs HPS vs MH. Thanks for posting the pictures.
Nothing like a side by side comparison. It all boils down to what you like!

wow this is turning into spinner vs retriever. LOL!!! Mine bigger than yours!!. Its all in what affordable for you, and your prefrence! everbody just get some 1,000w and the argument will be done!
