So I have been looking into the idea of building my own led lights I've been searching the internet and its been pretty confusing but I'm pretty sure I've got an idea of what I need. I need a chip, and driver of the same wattage and it will need to be 12v input to run off of batteries, and a housing that will disperse the heat from the chip. Since my dad is a tool maker he could make some housings up for me for free and I could make these for well under $30 a peace if I've got everything right let me know if I'm missing something.

biggest thing is dissipating heat. you need a heat sink and some contact grease between the chip and the heat sink. there are some good youtube videos that guys play around with building them but its kind redundant now. the prices are so cheap now your better off buying lights.

aside from that a little bit of sodering skills and some patience and you'll make some light. just keep in mind its all how fast the heat is pulled from the chip to keep it from burning up depends on how long the chip will last.

And unless your dad is a magician too, those housings will cost someone some $. Start with a project like re-assembly of an old clock radio. Try to make it look like you built it all from scratch, where you can see the board and the wires, and take it to your favorite teacher. Lol
Seriously, buy some lights. Don't burn down the Funky Chipmunk!

since he has the 27s he wouldn't need to add much more. I had 14-27s on the front of that boat 4 yrs ago and it did great but I had 4 batteries in her belly to. yea on second thought chance better look at some 110 lights for a upgrade. something like 4-100s and a cheap 800w genny would be boss on that little boat. but don't worry bout it for a while those 27s are more than enough to keep you fishing. just get them 10-16" up off the gunnel. it gives them more distance to spread the light evenly.

Used computer heat sinks work well. Find a PC repair shop, they usually have crates full of them, usually about $5 each.
Tricky getting then incorporated into a housing.
My DIY 100watters use fan cooling too. The real benefit is more light output than the Chinese lights that use the housing as the heat sink. But like has been said, it ain't cheap.
I think DIY LED is for wanting better lights not to make them cheap
