Seen one that was 4 times as big as this one! He was VERY close! He would be hard pressed to swim through a 5 gallon bucket! I think it is a short nose, but the other one I saw would pass for a alligator gar any day! Seeing the "big boy" got me to thinking. Alligator Gar are not supposed to be in the spot I shot this fish. If they are short nose the "one that got away" will be a trophy for sure, if not a record of some sort.

Thanks

sure looks like a young Gator gar to me see if he has three rows of the large teeth. For better outdoors take a kid hunting & fishing it's our future. Randy

Thanks for all the replies, looks like a good question so far.

I shot it last summer and remembered wondering about him that night when I was going through some pics. I labeled him a shortnose that night because of the area. Have seen several others, in fact this one was part of a pair. The only thing that makes me question is seeing the one that dwarfed this one. I have fished the trinity and have seen G G in the water and in the boat, the big one sure looked like a GG to me, but I dont even remember looking at his head. This was a buddies spot on a small lake and I dont want to throw him under the bus, plus I want to go back. It is not a big river lake and there are not supposed to be GG there for sure. Still leaning twords Shortnose, the fish is long gone, and I dont have any better pics, I will see if my buddy does.

Thanks for the help
