Your going to need a genny putting out about 5500 watts... You pretty much want to stay under 80% of the running watts for the good of the genny... I would try and find some 300w Ultras or 225w Ultras and mix em up...

Surge watts and peak watts are the same. You want to go by it's rated watts or "continuous" watts. Like Deer_Predator said, if you want your generator to last longer, only push it to 80% of it's continuous rating. I have ignored this in the past and haven't had any problems though. I used to run ten 500w halogens on a 5500 watt mcculloch generator with no problem. Had to do a little creative wiring to utilize the 220 breaker though as the amp draw was over the rating of the 120 volt outlets and would trip the breaker. I like light so I stayed with the 500 watt bulbs as they are way brighter to me. If you are going to run eight 500w lights, I'd go with a generator that has a CONTINUOUS or RATED wattage of 5000 watts at least. Ignore the peak wattage.
