why do trolling motor mounts typically run at a 45 degree angle? Strength? Reason i ask is troller bracket will not raise out of water at that angle due to the deck. What if i was to take the bracket and run it straight side ways? Pros cons?

On my boat the troller is mounted straight ahead on the far left side. The reason for this is two fold. One, having it on a side creates more open space on the deck. Two, I'm left handed so I prefer shooting off the right side of the boat; having the troller on the left side of the boat allows me to keep the troller in deeper water while cruising banks.
I run a sexy stick on my foot control and would do it any other way. My boat is a 1848 flat bottom and I have had zero issues running it off centered like this, plus performance seems to be unaffected.
