I couldn't tell you what it is, I've never used more than 5 gallons in a night. Our lakes simply aren't that big.

I have a 1644 with a 35hp merc, it doesn't drink much gas.

I stand by my statement about hopped up mud motors, they drink a lot of fuel. I'm fortunate to have mostly clean water in my area and have no need for a surface drive.
Well you don't own one and you never have owned one. Not trying to be a dick at all Gary but You really don't know you're talking about. It is nice you're lakes don't require them I love mine and is hands-down my favorite boat I have owned. Also you say you have never burn more than 5 gallons. have you ran that motor at Idle and wide open for 14 hours straight? I have. Seriously though you will be shocked what your motor actually burns if you run 70 miles in a night. 70 miles of driving around water is a long f***ing way lol.

I've spent a significant amount of hours in a gator tail, they are noisy and inefficient, air cooled motors were out dated a half century ago. They are far from complex, How much is there to know about lawn mower engines?

My best friend loves his too, I think its silly, thats why they call them opinions. They have their place, but I don't need a 4wd boat.

Why would I run wide open for 14 hours? Doesn't leave much time for shooting when all you do is run "wide open" all night. The biggest lake we shoot is 18 miles across, it would be difficult to accumulate 70 miles in a night. We're fortunate, usually shooting fish 10 minutes after the boat hits the water.

My family has property on the Mississippi, I could see some long runs and high fuel bills fishing in that environment.

That's not what I said Gary. I did not say run wide open for 14 hours. you may spend time on them but, you really have no idea what you're talking about. I can promise that these motors are more fuel efficient than almost every outboard and inboard out there. I don't know why I'm arguing with you, in your little world your right. But you couldn't be further from the truth. Before shooting your mouth off. Do me a favor. Go top your boat off, run your boat wide open for 20miles, go back to the ramp, put it on the trailer go straight to the gas station and fill up again. What I can promise you is this, if you have a 6 gallon gas tank... Make sure you have cell service to call a friend to tow you back to the ramp, cause you will be out of gas at about the 13-15 mile mark. From the pictures you've posted it appears you have a early 70s model Mercury between 25 and 40 horse had a very similar motor 6 gallons of gas would not give me 15 miles up river. My 87 Johnson was around 3miles per gallon wide open. In Case you didn't realize how to measure mpg on boat. Run it wide open for an extended period of time that's how you actually test fuel efficiency in boats.

This is why I rarely get in here anymore, people with little to no experience, give poor inaccurate advice on topics with no factual knowledge of a subject.

That's an 1860 Prodigy with a GatorTail, either stage 1 or stage 2 I can't remember.

This boat runs 25 with a 2 guys, gear and the deck on it. The minute we fill the barrel full of fish it becomes a dog, they simply don't haul weight worth a damn.

And it burns at least twice as much fuels as my 1985 35hp merc.

I'm just curious how you know me so well as to presume what I do and don't know?

That's cool Gary, and you own neither and prolly drove them for what an hour? What does your picture have to do with your idea of fuel efficiency it's a way to change the subject because you don't have facts to back up your bogus argument.

I'm sure it does burn twice as much because whenever you take your boat out you probably Idle from the ramp to your spot. Run the boats the exact same distance with the exact same load and you will be out of gas I promise. I will agree with you on this single motors do not carry a load. dual motors will carry your entire boat loaded with people and run on plane at 25+ miles an hour. I'm out Gary. The last time I argued with you was about shooting for two or three people out of 1436 or something stupid and you said it would be just fine.

I spent all summer in that boat, I watched the fuel tank drain, quickly I might add.

Unfortunately I did have to drive it, the tiller torque is irritating as $hit. I don't see how you can say that the inferior air cool engine circa 1940's technology will be as efficient as a modern water cooled outboard?

You're proving my point, the fact that you need 2 Surface Drives to do the work of one Outboard should make it odvious they aren't the best option for everyone.

Like I said I'm done Gary. If we ever meet, let's line up run the same distance. I'll be happy to tow you back to the ramp, when your out of fuel. And if I'm wrong I'll pay to fill up your boat. To the guy wanting to build a dual mud motor setup. Do it, you won't regret a single second of having it, best boat out of the 10 I have owned.

At least we can agree on something.

Listen dude I'm not $hitting on your boat, to each their own. The guys I fish with run surface drives and love them just like you. These boats are rare in California, we get a lot of looks from people when we're on the water. To get to the premier spots to duck hunt you have to have one.

My whole point was, if you don't NEED a surface drive because the water you fish doesn't require one, there are better options availible. A modern used outboard with twice the hp can be had for 1/2 the cost of the Mud motor.

That Prodigy I posted with have an a 100hp outboard on it for bowfishing next season, and the Mud Motor for running the rivers and duck huntinh.

I thought we were getting somewhere when I started reading this one, and then it turned into a boat race. Lol. Celebrity death match!!!! Seriously, here's a pic of my 2015 Yamaha 115 @14 hrs. My next one will be a tunnel jet or twin surface drives. I'd prefer the latter.
