I really like them Mast small blocks, they are a bad ass little light smooth running motor, but I don't know about longevity of them...low hours on all of them. But it sems to be the new fad with air rangers and diamonbacks.

with the low rpms of deisels, wouldnt it prolly do ok if it wer direct drive??? like the cummins for example, 1750-2200 is wer the power is. and u want ur prop to turn around 20somthin hundred so if u got a direct drive cummins, wen u get to the peak of the power band ur props gona b goin around the rpms you wud b lookin for. right?
Direct drive would be fine for the cruising RPM, the problem is spinning the prop slow enough to get a good fishing speed....

I called JW and talked to him for a little while, hes up in MI right now but when he gets back im gonna try and hang out with him for a weekend and pick his brain a bit and see what we can come up with. Seems like if if you could get a multi speed reduction, like a low/high it would work great since you need a higher reduction at ile since a diesel idles much higher than some of the gassers do and then put in a high fear of probably a 1.5ish:1 or maybe even a 1:1

same here im wantin 1 i just wish they had been puttin em out longer so we could find some with some hrs. wats the most uve seen on 1?

LOL I tell u what Joe...its really cool, you can literally step deck to deck of boats up here compare them side by side and even watch them drive in the exact same conditions! I know exactly what I want my next boat to be. Heck there is even a Ford powered Airboat up here.
So what you want?

I want a bone stock 572 with a 2.3 gear box not a belt drive, swinging 3 S blades...belt drives r nice and quiet, but have bad torque roll. Or a 502 with 2.3 gear box swinging 4 R blades... If money was no option...572 with a counter Rotater...but I don't have 30 grand to spend on just that.

Iron head 502 with 2.3 reduction and water walker props. This boat will walk through da marsh now! Loaded down with people it don't care it goes where ever you point it. That goes back to hull design... That's a Robicheaux hull!

There is a trail boss boat up here Steve knows him, he has a bad ass motor I can't remember but I think its a 632 with a 2.68 gear box swinging a 4 blade r at 6,000 RPM's that damn thing will flat out go where ever he wants...the blades r set on 3 "Max pitch" and i know it hits the studder box at 6K I'm not recommending anything, but I think he needs a 2.3 or even a 2.1 reduction...that motor aint even working with the 4 blade R set at max pitch!
Thats Richard Jordan. Great guy! When he gets enough prop and reduction to hold that bad boy, its gonna be crazy! Brady he drove it right up my hill at the river. Definately over 800hp.

on the stinger gear boxes wats the difference in the soft and hard drive? it says the soft drive has a cushioning system to reduce gear noise, but if its better then y do they even make the hard drive???? Or do u pick ur poision, for instance does the hard drive get more power to the prop but noisey and the soft drive b a lil less effiecient but quiet??

Hey Brady, when you look at all the boats from a distance and look at the engine and drive thrust line, are all the motors, drive and props parallel to the bottom of the boat so you have a straight thrust line? In other words does it look like the motor is sitting high in the front or flat?

There are 12 boats around me as I type...some look low n the front of the motor some look level, and some high n the front...I would have to take a level and get the hull level and then check off the reduction housing to be 100% sure how they sit n the boat...its miss leading when they r sitting n da water. I don't honestly know the difference between the stinger soft and hard drives...I just know the soft drive is lots quieter!

the soft drive has six hard rubber isolators that bolt to the flex plate. the drive plate has six round holes slightly larger than the hard rubber bushings making the drive connection. I had mine rebuilt with the gearlash set tighter to allow for a quieter drive unit. The unit came back very quiet (not as quiet as a belt) but i lost 0.25 in pitch on the prop blades.

Brady - i am running a 502 putting out approx 580 hp with a 2.68 stinger soft drive and a 3 blade 82" S blade. I feel the 2.3 drive would of been a better choice to get the blades spinning faster. Do you agree or disagree?
If you go to a 572, would you run a 2.3 or 2.68 drive?
