Preston...there is a ******* boat up here similar to shape and size to ur boat. It has a bone stock 502hp 502 2.3 reduction and it can't swing 3 S blades set on 1 "minimum allowed pitch" what are your blades set at now with that 2.68? With ur extra HP you might be able to swing them blades pretty good, if not you can always stroke it to a 540 :)

My blades are set on 3.0 running 4800 rpm. I was on 3.2 before i sent the drive off cause I chipped a tooth racing Kain to our hole on millwood.

I just was curious on my 540 / 572 increase this winter if i should go with a 2.3 drive and a 4 blade or stay with the 2.68. The prop is going to be a 4 blade superwide whispertip from Whirlwind (new blades coming out). Leaning towards going back to a belt.

I don't know a whole lot about gear drives other than from what I hear, I dont want to listen to one while fishing. Those things sound like chit while Idleing...

I know I'm a couple pages late but back diesel motors. Could you put one on an airboat and run farm diesel in it? My understanding that it's quite a bit less expensive
Tax exempt or farm Diesel is for off road applications only. I would assume that you could run the red stuff as long as you were not slideing down a public road! HAHA...

Just wondering because a new Cummings cost pretty close to the same as a new big block and you would get better fuel economy out of the diesel coupled with the cheaper fuel and the gobbs of power you can get out of a diesel. If I were having one built I'd look into it. I don't know if weight would be an issue or not, but the math makes sense in my head

Brady,
how much time yall got left up there. i knew i should have came when a couple guys i know from cleveland headed up there. instead of sitting here going broke.

mine is 20' trailboss 454 built to hilt, 2.3 belt with 82" whirlwind. it will run down a wet grass airstrip like crazy, run it all over anahuac when the tide was out though it wants to get a little sticky when you get 300 yds or so into one of those dry black mudflats. Richard had a hand in putting this boat together as well.

Ok dumb question Im sure. What do you gain or lose with the different belt drives? 2.1, 2.3, or 2.6. I understand the motor turns 2 times to the 1 time of the prop on a 2.1 but what do you gain or lose?

Here's the issue.... Regardless you will need to spin that motor to 4k rpms to have a good shot at making it work. The problem is a common rail idles at roughly 800 RPM's idk if that can be lowered with EFI live yet or not.... The issue is you will need a big reduction to spin the prop slow enough to fish but your pushing the envelope of the cummins already at 4k rpms with the sweet spot being in the 1800-2200 rpm range. When JW gets back from MI I'm gonna go visit him and pick his brain more on the setups he used.

Reductions are torque multipliers ...meaning take your peak amount of torqe and multiply that number by 2.1 2.3 or 2.6 and that's the amount of torque u make at the reduction shaft, meaning the more torque u make the more prop u can run...that means the difference in running #3 blade R with a 2.1 or a 3 blade S with a 2.68.

For what its worth, I have a 16x8 alumitech with a 350 vortec, 2 to 1 belt, 80 inch stump puller prop and this boat will run dry all day long with three people in it!!!!! And I can fish all night long on 25 gallons of gas!!!!
