If a guy says he will build a boat for me and he needs money down for the materials is this normal procedure or what? I found a guy who will build a 22 ft hull for 3500 bucks and my family says don't do it.

Material alone would cost me more than that, but he may be using thinner metal. I would advise you to use caution. Talk to some people in his home town that know him. Try to find out a little about him first.

3500 up front is very understandable. As stated, it's his insurance that you won't back out of the deal.

No access to that Gary . But it takes a lot of material for a 22'x whatever boat. Just a bottom and sides yeah. That wouldn't be much. But the bracing and decking and odd and end crap adds up. Where I get it seems very cheap compared to anywhere else. And the last time I was there they had the material for 10 gator trax boats stacked up waiting on em to pick it up. So it isn't over priced. But it depends on thickness and bracing. Where u fish a beer can might work but some places r a lil rougher on a boat

Back to the thread idk the guy never heard of him but 3500 upfront is fine. Carry on fellas!!

For some reason I thought I read 18'. But even at 22' that sounds about right, unless your incorporating walk-arounds and built in storage. Then odviously the price for materials would go up.

When I see custom builds and read the prices people pay for materials I feel very fortunate to have the ability to order direct from the manufacturer via my shop.

How much is the total price of the hull?

I wouldn't blindly send anyone the cost of materials, I'd demand a written contract with the ability to levy a lein if he doesn't fulfill his part of the bargin. You could easily pay for materials and he could simply sell your hull to a other party.

Got to protect yourself.
