Don't beat me up for asking a dumb question, so here goes. Are all the newer bow fishing specific compounds pretty much in the 40-50 lb draw weight? Most seem to be around 40 and just seemed kind of low to me. Now this is coming from a guy with 30 years of bow fishing with a 50 lb or higher recurve, so excuse my ignorance on the matter. Seeing bows listed at 30-40 lbs saying how much carp/gar busting power they possess kind of surprised me, please enlighten me. I'm interested because I convinced the wife I needed a new rig and need an education on the newer gear. Thanks in advance.

I've had my osprey set the same since I bought it new last year. I never actually checked the poundage where I set it, but it felt good to me. I figured it was around 38lbs...just guessing. I checked it last week and it has been on 33lbs this whole time. Doesn't seem like much, but it sure gets the job done.

I think it all depends on the type of shooting you do. I shoot from a boat, daytime in clear water, so a 40 lb bow is not gonna cut it for me. And before any more osprey guys chime in, I have an osprey too, and I keep it set at 50 lbs just like my other bows. Tried it at 40 and it didn't have the reach I needed.

Kinda shocked me that they are so light. The last bow other than my recurves I used was an Oneida H 250 back in the '80's. It was set at 60 or 65 lbs. That suckered never even slowed down blowing through a mullet or sheepshead. Thanks for the replies and I'm sure I'll have some more silly to the modern day shooter questions soon.

I shot a 45 lb compound bow for a couple years then switched to a PSE Kingfisher recurve bow that's rated at #45. I shot a 5 foot gar with it that was about 3-4 feet deep the other day and it nearly throughshot her just behind her head. It's pretty powerful at #45.

Shot my wife's Craze yesterday set on 25-30lb, barely stuck in a 30lb grass carp at about 6yds in 1ft of water. Arrow didn't even pass through, only maybe halfway.
Have it a couple of cranks, shot a 3ft gar next and it was fine, I would expect it to be close to 35-40lb now.
Which confirms what I've always knew, I don't want a bow less than 40lb lmao

I kinda want to get one set at 18lbs for shooting dink gar.. sure would be neat
I agree! I hate shooting thru them at 27lbs, thats as low as my Black Eagle will go... Only time i will ever shoot more than 40 is when im shooting 4-6ft deep at big ole feesh
