I found a 2003 Jonhnson 4hp 4 stroke kicker for $600, but would have to drive 3 hours to get it. My question is I am building a 1650 flat bottom john boat. Would this kicker be big enough to properly push the boat, and do you think its a good deal if the motor checks out?

I say it will be plenty big enough for your sized boat. I know Michael Evans has a 5 hp Tohatsu on his 2072 and it does very well even in the strong Savannah River currents! Whats the talk about no reverse? Does this motor have reverse or not? I think the price is a little steep too. You could spend a few hundred more and get a brand new motor with a warranty.

Just looked on a site I bought a new Tohatsu from a few years ago. They sell a brand new 4hp Tohatsu short shaft for 1099 delivered to your door. A long shaft is slightly more. Thats with reverse and is compatable with a remote fuel tank. I would look for a long shaft too if you can find one.

JP not sure about this particular motor but some of them around that hp dont have reverse

i used to have a 4 hp on my 1770 and it pushed very well, it was a 2 stroke tho

It does have reverse. I only have 600 right now so a new one is out of the question, but this motor new is priced at 1400 being a long shaft. The only other motors I have found in this price range are 4 to 8hp motors from the late 70's early 80's.

I was just sayin that if your goin at a pretty good speed and need to reverse the boat for a rock or stump it's gonna take forever to stop it but it should push the boat fine.

yea better than the briggs if im not mistaken i belive people were having troble with the bracket that bolts to the transom cracking or breaking

Get it and don't look back. That little motor will push that boat in forward or reverse way better than you realize. It will push faster than you will wanna shoot. This motor will reverse your boat plenty fast enough.

just picked up a briggs 5hp with only ten hours on it for 445. havent had any problems yet and it pushes a 2072 sea ark just nice

Picked up the johnson 4hp it runs very good! Now to rig it up. Duck tape, zip ties, and some jb weld should do it !!!!
