I started out with teleflex cable and by the time I had it run from front to back it was so hard to pull the cable I took it out. Then I went and got some small diameter aircraft style cable with a inner and outer. That feels real smooth when not in the boat but when you have 30 ft of it dosent pull as easy. I have no sharp bends and I am very confused. The other problem I had was not enough travel on the carb with a regular brke lever so I had to add on a tab to get more travel. Right now it is so hard to pull that its not going to work. Any suggestions on what the problem is, I have been dinking around with this throttle setup for 4 days now, and want it to be smooth and bullet proof.

We used 3/16 ss cable and 1/4" air brake line for a 18 wheeler truck and lubed it up with I think it was line lube that electricians use to help pull wires through conduit. Its been working for us for over a year now and the best part is we only have about $30 in our whole cable.

Ok, two questions.

1. How big is the throttle return spring on your engine? You may have to go to a smaller spring...

2. Have you bypassed the governor on the engine?

before we bypassed the gov, on the 20 honda we have, it was a mo-fo to pull but after bypassing the gov, you can pull the throttle with one finger....

I run my throttle with my index or pinky finger, it is very easy to run and use a mountain bike brake lever, but you do have to adjust the cable just right or you won't get full throttle out of it. I'm running the aircraft style inner-outer cable and bypassed the governor as well and use the linkage off it to run my throttle.

The throttle spring is hard to pull, even with your finger and no I havent bypassed the govener. Im gonna mess with it today and see what I can do Thanks for the advise. Some one told me that the cable should not be clamped dowm because it would pinch the inner cable. My cable does have a steel inner so I cant see that being a problem.

You have to clamp the outer cable ends down somehow to keep them from sliding. We used two mini ubolts on the front and a cable clamp off a lawnmower throttle for the back. You do have to be careful to not pinch the outer cable, and if you need to cut it, you have to be really really careful with that too. It works fine, but like Mark stated, those aircraft (inner/outer) cables always seem to need a bit of adjustment.

Teleflex has a new throttle cable out, one of our partner teams rigged out his fan with one and its almost as smooth as the old wicks aircraft cable we are running. I believe that will be the next throttle cable purcace for the fanboat...

you are definatly going to want to bypass the gov, you will decrease the amount of travel you need to reach wot with the gov bypassed...
