yes that's what he meant and its what I have (1"x3") but a ton of stress is put on a direct drive motor. a reduction is built to fit any shaft 4" or longer. I personally will not buy anything less than 1 1/8 x 4". there are some guys on here building fans with the 22 hp predator motor from harbor freight. it looks like a pretty good choice actually. especially since its only about 7bills. might give those a look.

I wouldn't even mess around with a 1 inch shaft. There is a lot of guys that do and there is a lot of them that snap. I wouldn't go less than an 1 1/8 shaft and to get that your going to need at least a 20hp motor. Just spend the money on a good motor Kohler, Vanguard, Honda ect don't mess around with those flebay specials or harbor freight motors chunk!!!

Yea, I agree. Get a sound motor from the start. I bought my Kohler 25 hp Command Pro for $999.99 from Northern Tool brand new. It was the floor model that they were selling at a huge discount. The only issue was the keys were missing. Just have to be patient and keep your eyes open.

its all in what you want to have when you get done. you can spend 800-8000 on a fan build. and if you haven't been around one before a tiny motor with 2 blades that pushes you threw "water only" may be impressive. it takes more fan to go threw and over more obstacles. but if you build it right very few obstacles will slow you down. however you must start with the right hull to see results like that. if you own a modV boat don't waste your time. if the boat is ribbed it will push decent but turn a little harder. a slickbottom boat works great but aluminum is porous and dents easily. the best scenario is a boat covered in poly thats extra wide and extra light weight. with enough fan usually only the driver's attitude will slow a boat like that down.

I couldn't disagree with you more. If you own a Lund, don't put a fan on it. A modified V still has a nearly flat bottom and can certainly be effective with a fan - as long as you don't underbuild it. Our fan will drag bottom, knock over swamp trees ~2" diameter, run thick cattails....Have you ever fished off a Mod-V fan boat? Given the big water we run and the constant windy/wavy conditions we face in North Dakota I'd never have a slick bottom fan boat. Will a slick bottom outperform a ribbed or veed boat in the shallows? Yes. Are Mod V's useless with a fan? Absolutely not, I'd never put a troller back on the boat unless the fan was down for repairs, that boat will get places you'd never, ever be able to shoot with a troller.

well no ive not fished a modV fan boat but every modV I've ever seen is riding around nose heavy and drags bottom long before a troller runs out of water. now im sure its nice not to worry about vegetation but it still takes a lot more water to float a modV. all im ssaying is here's no replacement for displacement. didn't mean it shouldn't be done, just tryin to explain that results vary greatly depending on the canvas you start with.

Actually that's not true...
The boat I just did is a mod v with an decent amount of v all the way to the transom. About 4" height difference from the chine to the bottom at the transom.
I run my troller just barely deep enough to stay under water and the troller will drag well before the hull touches bottom. Had the troller buried to the nose cone on some mud flats weekend before last and the boat was still floating.
A guy I use to shoot with had a mod v tracker that was the same way except its flat.

Freaking weird Indiana water! :gay:

I'm sure weight (distribution) and boat size will play a big factor on how they sit. Smaller boat with small motor and 4 big arse dudes up front on the deck.....

My boat is pretty damn big with a bigger motor plus 4 big batteries and big genny on the back. I'm actually to stern heavy (my thread from last week). So 3 or 4 guys up front just kinda evens it out at most.
