But if all you can see is a dark spot how do you know its not a bass?
You arent going to win this arguement bud. Just dont say stupid crap about shooting at shadows and you wont have to worry about it

Bass under halos are a silverish grey to me and commons are kinda yellow and buffs are buffs

If you see their smoke but the fish are gone, I'd say it's more likely your propulsion setup than anything else. Some trollers are louder than others, with more vibration from the motor/prop or the way it is mounted. Could be moving too slow or too fast/loud. I think an underpowered troller on high the whole time will probably spook more fish at the same boat speed than a bigger troller with a bigger prop that is spinning slower.

If you're seeing ok in the water maybe you just need to find different spots. Sometimes my spots hild fish and sometimes they move. Just have a few backup spots in case they aren't there. You can have a high dollar rig but if you don't know where the fish are, a canoe can beat ya

Thanks, everyone. I run an older Edge 70 so I'm looking at upgrading so something newer and quieter. I might drop to a 55lb motor.
I would suggest going to a 80lb troller! You can run faster and quieter. you will burn up a 55 mostlikley. I started with a 55 on the back of my 1652, then a bow mount 80, then converted it to a 101lb. It's better to run a larger motor slower then a little one wide open.

I used to exclusively run the banks until one time while cutting crossed a large section of open water did I figure out how many fish push out into deeper water. There they schooled near the surface but where in four feet of water. We ended up starting to run wide open on the troller to catch the schools. All I'm saying is mix it up sometimes and go out scouting. Google maps is a useful tool to pick out some new areas you may want to hit up as well.
