I have a 502 with just under 700hrs. I'd buy the 502 kit motor from GM since only an assembled short block and the rest you have to assemble. Take that opportunity to put some good valves in it and then put it together. I run Mobil 1 Synthetic 15w50 and change the oil every 50 hrs.
not an airboat owner so don't bash me too hard but what was wrong with the 496??? seemed like an awesome motor to me...and why did it leave? not trying to hijack, this is just the first I heard of this.
He had a 150 gallon in there, I have a 67 gallon in it now. Ran 24 miles fished all night and ran 24 miles back burned 52 gallons. Not bad if ya know how to drive, that's why Roy drives. Cause it would take me 175 gallons to go that far lol
I loved my crate 454. 950 hours on her and slung a bearing. 496 now. Had it to do over again I would have put another 454 in it. It did all I needed it to do. Run dry and ran great
I had a 502/502 it was a wicked engine. It would scare you in my 20ftr with the Holly carb. She did like the fuel but I say she would take a beating. I ran it hard for a long ways back before you could trailer at the Muzzy. It was awesome passing folks that blasted off before us and seeing their face when an airboat passed them. I had trouble with the carb but never any problems out of the engine. I would love to have a 502hp. fuel injected on a mid weight hull. I think you need to take what hull you are going to run into account when picking the engine. Those 496's are not enough for heavy boats.
I lost 650 hp on the way to the Cajun this year , I don't know where it went lol
