I have an iPad mini and a bluetooth GPS receiver on the boat. For under $250 its a nice big screen with GPS that doesn't use data service. I use the navionics app as well
Which brand n model receiver do u use?

I'm using my IPad and just link the hotspot on my phone if I need to load location or to load another map.

I wonder what a 25lb silver would do to an ipad?
I would be willing to bet that an Ipad would hold up to a 25lb silver about 10 times as good as any lowrance or other gps unit.

after some searching I found that a tablet with built in GPS like a iPad or a Galaxy3 can run navigation programs without the need for internet connection. however the maps must be downloaded prior. lakemaster has a newer app called contour elite but it isn't free. however this appears to be a exceptional option. navionics has a app as well.

I'm researching as well. Anybody use a Humminbird Helix 5 GPS/Sonar/DI? I like the looks of the Lowarance Elite too. Just don't know which way to go
Go to a Bass Pro or Cabela where you can see both in Demo mode. Make sure the one in Demo is the way it will look on the boat...

Had Lowrance Elite 4 on dash, wife bought me a Hummingbird GPS/Finder for the nose, used it 2 nights, took it off and returned to Bass Pro for a Lowrance HDS-7. Absolutely did not like it, when I took it back guy said it had no detail on the maps because i needed to buy this or that map... even though side of box shows great map detail and no wording saying this is not how it looks without additional purchases.. With Lowrance, all pre-loaded, worked right out of the box.

You can see the main channel indication (color), depth markers, etc. . Black night I don't have any trouble running on plane and just watching the elite 4 full screen map. I set my navigation so boat icon is always pointed up and map rotates, less confusing than the North up setting. Zoom out for long runs, zoom in when channel narrows or shallows are close.

If you have ran that spot recently, you can see you previous bread crumb trail and hang right on it for a safe path in and out.

Caveat is it will never save you from hitting a floater, a unlit buoy or boat, etc. You still need to wear a vest, watch tree lines, cliffs, standing timber, etc. Beauty is it will always get you out and I don't fear pulling into a lake at night I have never been on and fishing 3-5 miles from dock and finding my way back.

Also if you prefish, it will breadcrumb all the coves and channels you drove and you can put waypoint markers on screen to places you want to return to (hot spots). we drop waypoints and put notes in our phones on notepad to what was special about that marker.

This shows map at 1/2 screen, I run my full screen.

so I have the dual xgps something or other. I just downloaded all the maps on my navionics app before I go out. With the bluetooth receiver I don't use any data. May be trivial to some people but the cell signal can use quite a bit of data!

Are all the lakes on it? Will I have to buy anything past what comes with it? Advantages to the 7? Thanks
I personally have been in TX, LA, MO, OK, KY and never found a lake not loaded on my Lowrance. I am sure there is some though... My buddy has a HDS 10 at t he console and in my opinion, way to big, even dimmed blinding at night and I like the compact and ease of use of the 4.

On the nose, I like seeing where I have been, what is coming up, what coves or creeks are near me or the other side of the lake and since having one I hate not having one on the nose all the time now.

I had a 7 on the nose, lost screen and replaced it with a HDS 5 Chirp that was on sale.
