I know that small blocks don't have a good reputation for holding up on an airboat but lets don't forget than an LS7 is not your typical cast iron small block out of grandma's ol' Chevelle.

With a 20 by 9 ft boat you are going to have plenty of water displacement to hold the extra weight. Trust me a boat that big will not be affected by the extra weight of a big block. In fact, gibbys old 18x8 red river had a 383 in it, and with 3 big guys on the front it was too front heavy and hard to keep strait while fishing. Also, IMO the extra weight of a big block helps the boat "turn" better and respond easier while on plane!

Air Rangers are some ground running boats anyways! Our southern draw boat was a 19x8 with a pleasurecraft 496 in it. Only 425 hp. We had 8 people in that slug and it still ran dry ground no problem. With 2-3 you could go anywhere! Well except the lillypad infested backwaters at anahuac! (huh full blown and hoopty) You are going to gain so much more than you will lose by going with the big block...trust me! Good luck with whatever you decide bud!
I have to agree with this.

Me personally, I have a bowfishing airboat, its first and number one function is to fish comfortably. I do not have personal experience with small blocks, but I have passed several after they went "kaboom" and I will have to say every airboat that I have seen with a sbc rode VERY HEAVY in the front! some of which would be so low that water would come over the front. I dont know about you, but to me, a boat that rides nose heavy while fishing is a disaster to operate, and trying to fish will not be comfortable. As Caleb stated, Not only will that big block have a better life span, but it will serve as a ballast and make your boat easier to operate. Thats just my take on it.

With a hull as big and heavy as yours, I honestly believe you will be much better off with a big block. Those new ls motors that Faron is pumping out are the chit, and no I dont think any have let go yet, but most of them have been put in 16-18' hulls with light duty poly. I sure would hate to see you be the first to turn one inside out. Just the bottom of that Rhino hull and that 1/2 inch thick poly will weigh as much as a 18' standard hull. That will give any small block a gut check, I dont care what the "research" says.

My grandmas had a ls6 454! It don't matter theres is still a lot of stress for hp per cube. Compare crankshaft weight, connecting rod weight, etc. small vs big block. Ya never know, maybe it would be the best engine out there.

i was looking at a ls motor for the boat that we just finished. and they are nice but i know that the 572 can push that boat fine. chevvyscoots old boat was a beast and his wasent fuel injected it pushed that anywhere you wanted to go. also MAS motors builds a engine not positive what it is but it has those same hp and tourqe numbers for less money and comes with a full 2 year warranty. you would have to deal with gene at gto who is a complete JERK. but a 2 year warranty is nice.

Yea I seen one of them red dollar silver river boat's that had a small block on it...this was a freaking huge boat...I swear the ass of that thing stuck out of the water when them boys were on the front deck... if it didn't have an enclosed lite rail water would come over the nose...I bet that sucker looks like a crank bait when u squeeze that front throttle too hard.

well.....getn it narrowed down........looks like maybe a scott shafiroff all aluminum fuel injected 540.......$16k turnkey with a 2 year warranty.........650hp/640tq........
Awesome. Is peak power at the right rpm?

need to check the numbers on the dyno and see where the torque is gonna be made........I just got off the phone with FAST and they said they I could get EZ fuel injection from them for the all aluminum 632 with 900hp and 865# tq????? Then my boat may sprout wings and fly off the water......

Bahaha those are some insane numbers! The 540 sounds like the key man...as long as the dyno numbers are in the rpm range you need! IMO on certain boats you can never get enough ponies...I dont see any reason to go over the 700 mark on a bowfishing rig though. I think you will end up tearing up more than you desire with that kind of power.

I just bought an airboat with a Shafiroff ultra street 540 carbed. Couldn't tell ya about the performance but sounds good on the trailer lol
